The equipment needed to cut, strip, crimp and assemble wiring is always changing. Here’s a look at some of the latest products.

Crimping Tools Have QPL Status

Daniels Manufacturing Corp. achieved Qualified Products List (QPL) status for its 51 Series of 6-ton form crimp tools. That means the tools meet military standards for terminating large-gauge insulated and uninsulated terminals and contacts.

All three heavy-duty tools are qualified to AS5259 standards for crimping terminals onto 8 to 2/0 AWG copper and aluminum wires. Each tool has a 340-degree rotating head to enhance maneuverability. Interchangeable die sets deliver optimal electrical integrity across a wide range of applications.

Three models are available. Model HDE51C is a battery-powered tool that enables data collection via Bluetooth connectivity. Model XHD51 has a hydraulic crimp head for precision and control on high-volume production lines. Model HD51 is a manual hydraulic tool that can crimp large components with minimal manual effort.

Complementing the tool lineup is a portfolio of military-qualified and commercial dies to support a range of crimping requirements. Each die set features a unique crimp configuration, such as hex, nest and indent, or confined crescent crimps.

Engineers can adjust temperature and belt speed to ensure repeatable results with wire harnesses, cable assemblies, busbars, ignition leads and other applications. Temperature can be set from 100 to 350 F. Belt speed can be set from 1 to 100 inches per minute. The heating zone is 52 inches long. The conveyor can be stainless steel or woven Teflon.

Cable Ties Are Made From PEEK

Ty-Heat TYPK cable ties are made from polyetheretherketone (PEEK), a high-performance thermoplastic that provides exceptional mechanical strength and long life expectancy. This halogen-free material meets the UL 94V-0 standards, which means it will generate little smoke and toxicity in the event of a fire. This single-piece, non-metallic cable tie is nonconductive, halogen-free and low outgassing.

Pull Tester Measures Crimp Strength

The NPL lever-operated digital pull tester measures pull-off force of electrical leads and crimped terminals. Weighing only 10 pounds, this portable instrument is designed to be used in the field. The device operates with a single-stroke pull-down motion. It automatically grips sample wire as the lever is pulled. It grips wire diameters up to 0.23 inch. Force can be measured in pounds, kilograms or newtons. It is equipped with RS-232C, Digimatic and analog outputs.

Controller for Desktop Crimping Tool

The Full Cycle Management (FCM) system is an upgrade for Rennsteig’s Pico series of pneumatic desktop crimping tools. The control unit features a color touch display with a user-friendly menu. It has two access levels—an operator level for daily tasks and a password-protected manager level for advanced settings.

The FCM features a resettable daily counter to track output for every shift and a serial counter to monitor total usage over the lifespan of the tool. Maintenance alerts automatically inform operators about calibration cycles and service intervals.

An integrated sensor control detects exactly when the final crimp position has been reached. A green light signals a successful crimp. If the indenters do not reach the final position within a defined timeframe, the system triggers a red light and a buzzer to alert the operator of a failure.

A throttle valve allows engineers to set crimp speed according to the specific terminal requirements. This gives the material time to flow and deform correctly, preventing cracks in the terminal. Engineers can also adjust the holding time at the final position, reducing the “spring-back” effect that is often seen in high-tension crimps.

Heat Shrink Tubing Protects Wires

Polyolefin heat shrink tubing can be applied to wire harness assemblies for insulation, protection and identification. Designed for flexibility and ease of installation, it shrinks uniformly at low temperatures to create a secure, professional finish on wires, cables and components.

This thin-wall tubing offers excellent abrasion resistance, strong electrical insulation, and reliable strain relief for splices, terminals and connectors. It’s ideal for bundling and organizing wire harnesses, as well as color coding and print applications for clear identification.

It withstands temperatures ranging from -55 to 135 C, and it complies with key industry standards, including UL, CSA and SAE AS23053).

Laser Strips Wires

The Odyssey-8 is a compact, single-wire laser stripper. With a rapid cycle time and no need for wire holding fixtures, the device can strip wires less than 0.2 millimeter in diameter. It can strip many types of insulation, including polyurethane, enamel, polyester and Kapton. It can process single conductors, twisted pairs, bifilar and multifilar wire. The standard strip length is 3 millimeters, but it can be set up for strips as long as 15 millimeters on request.

Tool Installs Cable Ties

This hand tool installs cable ties quickly and efficiently. The distance between the trigger and handle is minimized, which reduces the trigger force required for operation. This lessens fatigue and increases comfort for smaller hands. An easy-to-read tension-setting indicator and a non-slip tension-adjustment knob ensure consistency from one operator to another.

Available in manual or pneumatic styles, the tool will accommodate all miniature, intermediate and standard ties. It is available with a curved or a straight blade.

Device Removes Shielding Cables

The Trim-Pro shield trimmer is an automated machine designed to remove shielding from single- and multi-conductor cables. Instead of trimming the shield by hand, it can remove the shield flush to the end of the cable or leave a pigtail for secondary processing.
