New Adhesives Are Made From Bio-Based Materials

Manufacturers are becoming more concerned about sustainability. If they can make a part from recycled materials or natural materials—without compromising performance or price—they are increasingly opting for the “green” choice.

That notion even extends to adhesives. Two of the new products featured in this month’s “New & Noteworthy” are made from plant-based ingredients. Can they work in your assembly?

 

Cyanoacrylate Is Made From Bio-Based Materials

Super Glue Ultra+ is a high-performance liquid cyanoacrylate adhesive made from 60 percent bio-based materials. Formulated from castor oil, this clear-drying cyanoacrylate offers excellent bonding capabilities for secure and seamless repairs.

It’s bio-based formula bonds within 15 seconds, giving you time to adjust your items for a more accurate repair. It also has a more natural smell than traditional cyanoacrylates.

The tube features a fine-tip nozzle to ensure pinpoint accuracy, minimize mess, and provide control for even the smallest repairs.

It bonds a variety of materials, including wood, rubber, metal, ceramics, glass, tiles, leather and plastic (except polyolefins and silicone). It resists impacts, water and humidity, and it is dishwasher-safe.

ThreeBond 1539 urethane adhesive

Flexible Urethane Produced From Plant-Based Materials

ThreeBond 1539 is a one-component, fast-curing elastic urethane adhesive for bonding, sealing and potting various materials. The adhesive can be cured by heating at a relatively low temperature (60 C) for a short time and does not require a long-time curing process. It uses a plant-derived polymer as the main component. The cured material is an elastic body, which is resistant to vibration and impact and excels in relaxation of stress caused by expansion and contraction of parts. It is elastic over a wide temperature range (-35 to 100 C). 

It has excellent adhesion to various materials, including aluminum, steel, stainless steel, copper, phenolic resin, epoxy, acryl, ABS, polycarbonate, nylon, PET, PBT, PPS, PVC and glass.

Permabond ET5164 epoxy adhesive

Epoxy Is Safe for Food Contact

Permabond ET5164 is a two-part, food-safe epoxy adhesive. With a mix ratio of 1-to-1, it complies with FDA 175.300 and EU 10/2011 regulations for food contact.

Lightly thixotropic, this epoxy is ideal for bonding stainless steel in food contact applications. However, it also bonds well to other substrates, including mild steel, aluminum, some plastics, ceramics and composite materials. Its rheology is neither too thin, nor too thick. For filter and sieve bonding applications, this gives it ideal flow control for optimum penetration and full coverage of mesh, while simultaneously ensuring no mess from overflow.

The adhesive has a long open time and working life at room temperature. This allows plenty of time to make any modifications and finishing touches to the product before bonding. It cures fully at room temperature in 24 hours. For faster processing, it can be cured at 60 C. This gives the adhesive working strength in 20 minutes and a full cure in one hour. Options for heat curing this adhesive include oven curing, induction heating, and infrared heating over the assembly line.

Other benefits include its high shear strength, great water and chemical resistance (the adhesive won’t degrade in the presence of cleaning chemicals) and its neutral, white finish. It comes in 50- and 400-milliliter cartridges.

EpoxySet's EC-1019 epoxy potting compound

Thermally Conductive Epoxy Resists Cracking

EC-1019 is a thermally conductive epoxy potting compound. The small size of the material’s filler particles (15 microns) allow the compound to penetrate and fill intricate voids. Its thermal conductivity of 2 watts per meter-Kelvin ensures excellent heat dissipation in temperatures ranging from -40 to 220 C. 

Its unique chemistry drastically reduces cracking compared with traditional, rigid materials. Its low coefficient of thermal expansion (22 parts per million per C) keeps stresses to a minimum.

It is used for tightly packed windings in motor stators and rotors, transformer coils, power supplies, and elaborate potting applications where thermal strain is a concern.

The epoxy has excellent resistance to moisture and chemicals and is a superior electrical insulator.
